20代で東大寺ハワイの3代目住職に。一方で、青年会議所の代表などを務め、ハワイ最大級の盆ダンス『メガ盆』を立ち上げた他、飲食店のオーナーシェフの顔ももつ平井コスモさん。人生の転機、活動の原点を聞いた。

私が住職を務める東大寺は１９５７年に建立されたもので、祖母が女性で初めて住職となりアメリカの本山として認められた寺です。私は３代目にあたります。
お寺を継ぐのは30代か40代だと思っていた20代のときに母が他界したことが、大きな転機となりました。
20代は、ハワイ大学を卒業後、初めて日本で1年間暮らし、ハワイに戻って寿司職人として働いていました。仏門に入るための得度式は終えていたものの、これから修行というときにお寺を継ぐことになったのです。すぐに奈良の東大寺で修行に臨みました。その過酷さにくじけそうになることもありましたが、さんや信者の方々のためにも自分が寺を守らなければという思いで、乗り越えることができました。そして２０１７年、住職になりました。
２０１８年、もう一つの転機が訪れました。JCI（青年会議所）との出会いです。母の他界後、友人に誘われたものの、最初はあまり興味を持てないまま１年以上が過ぎました。それでも少しずつ関わりを深め、思い切って入会してみると、大きな気付きを得ることになったのです。地域課題の解決など社会貢献に取り組む中で、アジア太平洋地域会議では20代のメンバーが地域を支える活動を堂々と発表する姿に強く刺激を受けました。このとき、社会を支え、リードすることの大切さを学びました。
その経験から立ち上げたのが『メガ盆』です。ハワイでは世代交代とともにお盆の文化や盆ダンスが失われつつあります。若い世代に日本文化を伝えたいという思いで、２０２２年にJCIの仲間と二人で企画を始めました。ハワイのお寺に一軒ずつ電話をかけて協力をお願いしたり、スポンサーを探したりしましたが、コロナ禍の影響もあり最初の年は開催できませんでした。翌年、会場がアロハスタジアムに決まり、仲間も8人に増えて準備を重ねました。当日は2〜3千人を想定していたのですが、それを遥かに超えて、１万5千人が集まり、驚きました。今年9月で4回目を迎えます。今では小さな子どもから90代まで幅広い世代に楽しんでいただけるイベントへと成長しました。
JCIに入っていなければ、メガ盆は生まれなかったと思います。これまでJCIホノルル代表、州代表を務め、今年はJCI世界副会頭として世界を飛び回っています。私がその役割を担う理由は、次世代を育てるためです。それには、まず自分自身が成長する必要があると思っています。
今は、ダウンタウンでのベントー店の経営や、レストラン協会のボードダイレクター、高校のエアライフル部ヘッドコーチなど、さまざまな活動にも携わっています。また現在、お寺の施設を合気道や茶道の教室に活用していただいていますが、今後は境内を整備し、地域により一層開かれた場所にしていきたいと考えています。こうした活動全てに共通する目的は一つ。それは、人と社会を支えることです。それが、祖母、母、そして仏教の教えから受け継いだ私の使命だと考えています。

The Todaiji temple where I serve as head priest was founded in 1957. My grandmother became its first female head priest and it was recognized as the main temple of the sect in America. I am the third-generation head priest.
In my twenties, I assumed I’d take over the temple in my thirties or forties, but my mother’s death became a major turning point.
Two Major Turning Points Shaped My Life’s Beliefs
In my twenties, after graduating from the University of Hawaii, I lived in Japan for the first time for a year, then returned to Hawaii and worked as a sushi chef. I had already completed my ordination ceremony to enter the priesthood, but just as I was about to begin formal training, I had to take over the temple. I immediately went to train at Todaiji in Nara. The training was so harsh that I sometimes felt like giving up, but I got through it with the belief that I had to protect the temple for the sake of the parishioners and believers. I became head priest in 2017.
In 2018, another major turning point came: meeting JCI (Junior Chamber International). After my mother passed away, a friend invited me to join. More than a year passed with little interest on my part, but gradually I became more involved and eventually joined.
While working on community contributions such as solving local issues, I was deeply inspired at the Asia-Pacific regional conference by young members in their twenties confidently presenting their community support activities. Through that experience, I learned the importance of supporting and leading society.
That experience led me to launch “Mega Bon.” I felt that with generational change, the culture of Obon and Bon dance was fading in Hawaii, and wanted to pass Japanese culture on to younger generations. In 2022, I started planning it with one JCI friend. We called temples in Hawaii one by one asking for cooperation and searched for sponsors, but due to the effects of COVID, we couldn’t hold the event in the first year. In 2023, the venue was set at Aloha Stadium, our group grew to eight members, and we prepared together. We expected 2,000-3,000 people on the day, but 15,000 people gathered! — it was a shock. This September will mark the fourth event. It has now grown into an event enjoyed by a wide range of generations, from small children to people in their 90s.
I don’t think Mega Bon would have existed without JCI. I’ve served as JCI Honolulu president and state president, and this year I’m traveling the world as JCI World Vice President. The reason I take on this role is to nurture the next generation — and for that, I believe I first need to keep growing myself.
All My Activities Exist to Support People and Society
Right now, I’m also involved in running a bento shop downtown, serving as a board director for the restaurant association, and coaching the air rifle team at a high school. At the temple, we currently let people use our facilities for aikido and tea ceremony classes, and going forward I want to develop the temple grounds into a place more open to the community. All of these activities share a single purpose: supporting people and society. I believe that is the mission I’ve inherited from my grandmother, my mother, and the teachings of Buddhism.
